Vintage Tia Halloween

Have I got a treat for you! I was looking through some of my pictures to see if I had any of my past costumes, and I found a few. The clown was when I was about 3, the cat was when I was about 5, and the poodle skirt girl was when I was about 10. I distinctly remember the year I was a cat. I had a tail attached to my butt and my dog kept trying to bite it off of me, it was pretty hilarious. Enjoy the pictures of my past!

Popular Costumes

Halloween is 2 days away! Do you have your costumes yet? Well, if you're planning on running out last minute for your costume and don't want to have a twin at the party, don't get these costumes. These are the most popular adult costumes/ideas for 2010. If you already have the idea  of doing one of these, rock it!

1. Witches. Still number 1 for obvious reasons, it's timeless.
2. Vampires. Oh Edward Cullen and Count Dracula.
3. Pirates. Captain Jack Sparrow!!
4. Nurses. So cliche. Please don't choose this one unless you decide to make it kinda creepy, then by all means. At Halloween Horror Nights, they had a nurse who was selling shots in a blood bag. It was pretty cool.
5. Lady Gaga is a huge costume this year. The costume, the hair, the accessories. The cool thing about being Gaga is that you can still be original by wearing the most outrageous things you can find.
6. Snooki/The Situation/Any other people from Jersey Shore.
7. Harry Potter. Expelliarmus!!
8. Characters from Alice in Wonderland. Specifically the Mad Hatter (I've seen some pretty sweet hats for this one)
9. Avatar. Yea, this one is going to be weird.
10. Ke$ha. I don't really know how you could be this one. Throw some garbage (literally) on you and call it an outfit? Oh, and don't forget the bottle of Jack so you can look like P. Diddy.

What are you dressing as for Halloween? Is it on this list?

Most haunted places

Looking for something new to do during your travels? Trade your usual fun-in-the-sun vacation for one of these strange phenomena, unexplainable events or mysterious murder locations. These are the Top Ten most haunted places in the world.

1. The Amityville House. If you haven't seen the movie (disappointingly not scary), this house is located on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, N.Y. and was the site of a brutal family murder in which 23 year old Ronal DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed his parents and 4 younger siblings on November 14, 1974. A little over a year later, George and Kathy Lutz and their 4 children moved in, knowing about the tragic events that took place. Soon after moving in, strange things began to happen.

2. Eastern State Penitentiary. Built in 1829 in Philadelphia, Penn. was the first prison to institute solitary confinement, which is widely believed to have caused mental illness among its prisoners. Abandoned in 1971, there are rumors of strange happenings. Cell Block 12 is famous for is disembodied laughter, and one guard tower appears on some nights to be occupied by a shadowy figure keeping watch over the empty prison.

3. Edinburgh Castle. This castle in Scotland was constructed as a military fortress in the early 12th century. Haunted tours are offered in its dungeons and in 2001 it became the site of one of the largest paranormal investigations in history. A team of 9 researchers and over 200 members of the public explored the castle's forgotten chamber and secret passages. The public was not told which areas were haunted and 51% reported paranormal experiences, while 35% did so in the non-haunted areas.

4. Gettysburg Battlefield. The battle of Gettysburg lasted for 3 days and was one of the bloodiest in American history. 50,000 young men died and it said that the site is haunted by fallen soldiers unable to accept their untimely fate.

5. The Myrtles Plantation. This estate is in St. Francisville, La. and was built in 1795 and is considered one of America's most haunted locales. It allegedly hosts several ghosts, one of the most popular tales concerns a former slave named Chloe, who as legend has it, had her ear chopped off by her master for eavesdropping. She allegedly sought revenge by poisoning a birthday cake which killed 2 of the slave master's daughters. Chloe was said to have been hung by fellow slaves and lingers around the plantation.

6. The Queen Mary. A former luxury ocean liner and war ship, it was purchased by the city of Long Beach in 1967 and transformed into a hotel. Among the ghosts reportedly still hanging around are a sailor who died in the ship's engine room, a "lady in white," and children who drowned in the ship's pool.

7. The Tower of London. This was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century as a prison. Among the ghosts that haunt the building are Anne Boleyn, the wife of Henry VIII who was beheaded in 1536; Lady Grey, who was spotted by a guardsman on Feb. 12, 1957, on the 403rd anniversary of her death; and Sir Walter Raleigh.

8. The Whaley House. Located in San Diego, this house was classified as haunted in the 1960s by the U.S. Commerce Department. The Travel Channel has also claimed it as America's most supernatural home. The earliest ghost was "Yankee" Jim Robinson, who was hanged on the site in 1852. When James Whaley built the house in 1857, he claimed to hear Robinson padding loudly through the halls. Whaley and his wife are also said to inhabit the house, announcing their presence with cigar smoke and perfume.

9. The White House. According to lore, some of its inhabitants felt such ties to the seat of the American power that they chose to linger long after their deaths. If you believe the whispers, the ghost of Abigail Adams (wife of John) does laundry in the East Room, while Dolley Madison's spirit likes to lurk around the Rose Garden, and the Lincoln Bedroom may be the site of visits from Honest Abe.

10. The Winchester House. This house isn't actually haunted, but it is still one of the spookier construction projects in history. After the death of her husband and child, Sarah Winchester (the wife of the rifle-maker's son) consulted a seer who proclaimed her family had been killed by the ghosts of those who died of bullets from her family's guns. The seer suggested that only perpetual construction on the family's mansion could mollify these spirits, which is what Sarah ordered. Workmen labored on the property every hour of every day for 38 years. The 160-room estate is very bizarre, with staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open onto brick walls, or ten-foot drops, and a window with an etched-glass spider-web motif.

Pumpkin recipes

One of the best things about the season of Fall is the wonderful spice of pumpkins. They are easily found in pumpkin patches all over the place and are a delicious touch to any recipe. I found some recipes that incorporate the flavor of pumpkin that will make you the hit of your next dinner party! Here's a couple.

Pumpkin Ravioli with Sage and Brown Butter.
- 1 3lb sugar pumpkin, or butternut squash
- 4t extra-virgin olive oil
- 2t light-brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup Locatelli cheese
- 3 large or 6 small amaretti cookies, crushed
- 2T ricotta cheese
- 1t shallots, chopped
- Pinch of nutmeg
- Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
- 1 1/2 lbs store-bought fresh pasta sheets
- 1T semolina flour
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1T freshly chopped sage leaves
- 2T balsamic vinegar

1.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. On a work surface, cut pumpkin in half lengthwise. Scoop out seeds; discard. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle olive oil evenly over insides of pumpkin halves; rub 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar into each. Roast, cut-side down, until pumpkin is easily pierced with a paring knife, about 1 hour. Let cool.
2. When cool enough to handle, scoop out flesh with a spoon. You'll need 1 1/2 cups of purée. Transfer flesh to a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth; wring excess liquid into a bowl. Place flesh in the bowl of a food processor, along with egg, Locatelli, amaretti, ricotta, shallot, and a pinch of nutmeg; process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Lay 1 pasta sheet on work surface. Place 1 tablespoon filling every 3 inches. Brush water around filling. Place another sheet on top, pressing around filling to seal. Using a fluted pastry wheel, cut each ravioli into a 3-by-3-inch square. Repeat with remaining pasta sheets and filling. Transfer ravioli to a parchment-lined baking sheet sprinkled with semolina; freeze for at least 30 minutes.
4. Bring a large pot of water to a boil; season with salt. Add ravioli; cook until it just floats, 3 to 4 minutes.
5. In a large sauté pan, melt butter over high heat. Add sage; cook until butter begins to brown and sizzle, about 1 minute. Remove pan from heat; whisk in balsamic. Using a slotted spoon, transfer ravioli to pan, tossing to combine. Serve immediately with cheese, if desired.

Pumpkin Pie.
- 1/2 recipe Deep-Dish Pate Brisee.
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1t ground cinnamon
- 1/2t salt
- 1/2t ground ginger
- 1/4t ground cloves
- 2 large eggs
- 1 can (15 ounces) Libby's 100% pure pumpkin
- 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
- Whipped cream, for serving (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. On a lightly floured work surface, roll pate brisee into a 12-inch round. With a dry pastry brush, sweep off the excess flour; fit dough into a 9-inch deep-dish glass pie plate, pressing it into the edges. Trim to a 1-inch overhang all around. Crimp edge as desired. Prick bottom of dough all over with a fork; set aside.
2. In a small bowl, mix together, sugar, cinnamon, salt, ginger, and cloves. Beat eggs together in a large bowl. Add sugar mixture and pumpkin; stir to combine. Stir in evaporated milk until well combined.
3. Pour mixture into pie shell and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees; bake until filling is set, 20 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool 2 hours. Serve with whipped cream, if desired, or transfer to a refrigerator until ready to serve.

Death by candy corn

Halloween isn't just about the spooks and scares, it is about so much more. It is about disguising yourself in an outrageous costume, walking up to a stranger's front door, and asking them for candy. Who doesn't love that creepy aspect? Here are my Top 5 favorite candies during the Halloween season:
1. Candy Corn. What's even better than just the candy corn pieces is the pumpkin shaped candy corn. Don't eat too much of it or you will without a doubt feel sick!
2. Reese's. That commercial got it right. "What's the scariest thing about Halloween? Having to give away all of your Reese's."
3. Skittles. I love tasting the rainbow.
4. Laffy Taffy. I could seriously eat like 50 of these in one sitting. I would never allow myself to do this, but it is possible.
5. Tootsie Rolls. I could probably eat 50 of these too.

Happy Favorite Things Tuesday!!

Halloween chic

Not dressing up in a costume and would rather have a hot outfit to wear for Halloween? I put together a Halloween inspired set on Polyvore. I love the sequin vest and those hot shoes. The vest is a little pricy, but the shoes are on sale for only $63...might have to snatch those up! Enjoy my set!

HHN+Harry Potter

This past Wednesday night my family and I went to Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights. It was so much fun and so well done! I thought Howl-O-Scream was good, but this just topped the charts. Being a production company, I knew that Universal would do a great job, but they exceeded my expectations. The people were scary, the atmosphere was spooky, and they had great themes for the haunted houses. So much fun! Here are a few pics from the evening.
On Thursday, my sister, mom, and I went to Islands of Adventure for the day. We've been there countless times before, but this was our first time seeing The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. My mom hasn't seen the movies or read any of the books, but we were all super excited to finally get to see Universal's adaptation of the books. Just like Halloween Horror Nights, my expectations were completely exceeded! They did a wonderful job and I couldn't have asked for more. The butterbeer was delish and came in 2 different forms, frozen or normal (they both tasted the same, but the frozen was way better for some reason). It was an overall great day!

Things that scare the $#!@ out of me

I love Halloween and all the creepy things it entails! While I know that creepy crawlies go along with Halloween, I just don't enjoy all of them. Here are the Top 5 things that scare the $#!@ out of me.

1. Birds. I know, they are beautiful and part of nature, blah blah blah. But, they are just so unpredictable. They are flying all around and I just know they are going to get caught in my hair, poop on me, or poke my eyes out all Alfred Hitchcock style.

2. Cockroaches. Welcome to Florida, they are everywhere. I absolutely hate them. These things are unpredictable too. Who knows if it will fly at your face when you are trying to kill it?

3. Snakes. Ughh these just give me the creeps. I hate them slithering all over the place and hissing.

4. Frogs. Eeek so slimy and warty.

5. When people jump out at me. This is the best part of a haunted house. While I love the adrenaline that comes from it, it makes my heart nearly jump out of my chest.

Appropriate wedding attire

In one of my speech classes in college, I presented the class with "Appropriate Wedding Attire." I get asked a lot, "what should I wear to a wedding?" So, for Fashion Forward Friday, I wanted to give you the information that was in my presentation. I broke the slide show down in seasons, so for this post I will give you the Fall and Winter rules. Note: these are the rules for women; if you are a guy and want rules, feel free to email me.

First of all, you need to look at the invitation. The invitation sets the tone of the wedding. If it's colorful and fun, you don't need to dress so seriously. If it's fancy, rest assured that the wedding will be someone of an elegant event. Second, you need to know what time the wedding is, as there are specific rules. If it's an afternoon wedding (before 6pm) you should wear lighter colors, if it's an evening wedding (after 6pm) you can wear black, darker colors, and sequins. Third, you need to know which type of wedding it is so you can dress appropriately.

Basic Don'ts:
- Don't wear white or ivory
- Don't wear black or sequins during the day
- Don't wear anything club appropriate
- Don't wear denim
- Don't wear anything too short, low cut, or too revealing

Fall Wedding
- Wear heavier fabrics and darker colors, such as burgundy, dark green and navy
- Always wear stockings or hosiery (unless you live in Florida...too hot for that!)
- If Black Tie fall wedding, floor length formal gowns are the most appropriate
- Dressy cocktail dresses (shown right) and evening suits are also appropriate

Winter Wedding
- Wear necessary outerwear, such as a long, classic coat, or faux fur
- Fabrics and colors should be similar to fall - heavy and dark
- Always wear stockings and hosiery
- Shawls and scarves are a a great way to mix accessory with function

I can hear the bells

Happy Top Ten Thursday!
Two of my good friends that I've known since high school are getting married this Saturday and I couldn't be happier for them! I wanted to discuss something about weddings for this Top Ten List, so here are the Top Ten overplayed first dance songs at weddings. I found this list a while back and I didn't realize how repetitive wedding songs really are. Though they get redundant and are extremely overplayed, they are classic staples for a wedding and I love them! Courtesy of Time.
1. At Last - Etta James. Who doesn't love this song??
2. What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
3. I Only Have Eyes for You - The Flamingos
4. Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
5. From This Moment On - Shania Twain. I used to love this song and pictured myself dancing to it (when I was like 12)
6. The Way You Look Tonight - Frank Sinatra. This song has been redone a million times, but I love it every time. I love the Michael Buble version. I'll probably be cliche and use this song.
7. Amazed - Lonestar.
8. Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton. Love this song!
9. It Had to Be You - Harry Connick Jr. His voice is so dreamy.
10. Unforgettable - Nat King Cole.

Halloween recipes

I was checking out Martha Stewart's website, and she has some awesome food ideas for Halloween! I definitely want to get the ingredients for a couple of these recipes, they just seem so fun to make! I love the carved citrus pumpkins with sorbet, such a cute idea.
Happy baking!!

Bewitched

One of the first things that comes to my mind for the Halloween spooking season is witches. For some reason, I love movies with witches in them! For Favorite Things Tuesday, I wanted nothing more but to indulge in my favorite witches of the season. Here's my Top 3:

1. The Sanderson Sisters. Better known as the witches from the movie Hocus Pocus who come back life to suck the lives of children. I wanted to be Sarah for Halloween so badly when I was a kid, probably the best character Sarah Jessica Parker has ever played. Bette Midler was fantastic in this as well.
2. Wicked Witch of the West. A classic green witch. I am proud to say that I was her one Halloween as a child. I even had the long green fingers and the wart on my nose! Funny story: when I was a kid, I had a dog named Misty which I loved. Each year in my town, we had a carnival for Halloween which included a haunted house. My mom took me into the haunted house one year and a witch said to me, "I'll get you my little pretty, and your little dog too!" I was mortified that she would steal my dog.
3. Hermione Granger. That's right, I'm a Potterhead. I love Hermoine and all her smartness. I thought about including Cedric Diggory (played by Robert Pattinson) to the list, but Hermoine is better and doesn't die in the series (sorry for the spoiler, but you should have read it by now).

Howl-o-scream

My sister came into town from Chicago on Wednesday, so on Thursday we started off her visit by celebrating the spooky Halloween season! We went into a bunch of haunted houses at Howl-o-scream at Busch Gardens, which was so much fun! It's so much fun to laugh at yourself for jumping 5 feet by someone in makeup saying boo. The theme was completely lame (My Ex), but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Next week, we are going to Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando and I can't wait! Here are a couple pics I managed to snag at Howl-o-scream, enjoy!

Spook-tacular jewelry

Happy Fashion Forward Friday!!
I'm all for tacky Halloween inspired jewelry and such. If I worked in an office or something, I would totally be sporting a pin or necklace to be festive. Here's a few finds I found that I thought were tacky, fun, and spook-tacular.
Have a good weekend!!
